Malawi went
into polls with eleven
(12) presidential candidates in the race. This year’s general election was
historical since it is the first time the country held tripartite elections,
meaning that it is the first time the people of Malawi voted for their local
government, members of parliament and President in a single election.
Although the
pole results are not out yet, the sitting president Joyce Bada who took over
power after death of the late President Bingu wa Mutharika has faced stiff challenge
and chances are she might not reclaim the seat. Although there were claims of
irregularity here and there, the election was peace and as at now the country
is at peace waiting for the results.
AMECEA
Justice and Peace Desk congratulate the people of Malawi for keeping peace. We
also urge them to remain calm as they wait for the result and accept whoever
wins as their leader. We also urge those who were contesting for various positions
not to incite people. The campaign period was not easy and most of them have
invested heavily in the campaign. However, we remind them that the country of
Malawi is greater than any one of them and encourage those who will lose to
concede defeat and build the nation in other ways.
It is now 50
years since the Republic of Malawi was born. Before people of listening to any
leader who incites them they should first reflect back to where they have come
from and where they are and ask themselves whether the gains they have made
throughout these fifty years is worth being wasted for the selfish gains of one
person.
AMECEA
Justice and Peace Desk appeals to sovereign people of Malawi to uphold the
words of their National Anthem; “Freedom
ever, let us all unite to build up Malaŵi.
With our love, our zeal and loyalty, bringing our best to her. In time
of war, or in time of peace, one purpose and one goal. Men and women serving
selflessly in building Malaŵi.”
