All public primary schools have re-opened today, Monday, July 22.
The re-opening was announced by Education Cabinet Secretary, Jacob Kaimenyi. "Pursuant to the statement I issued on July 17, 2013 on the indefinite closure of all public primary schools, I now announce the re-opening of the said schools on Monday July 22, 2013," said Kaimenyi.
The government had announced through the cabinet secretary, the closure of all public primary schools indefinitely, and this prompted the Kenyan National Union of Teachers (KNUT) to end their 23-day strike, the same day.
Some pupils attended school last week on Thursday and Friday, after the KNUT called off the strike, but there was misunderstanding in schools all over the country, following the announcement of closure by the Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Kaimenyi, and the call by KNUT for all teachers to go back to class.
The teachers are returning to class with a Sh16.2 billion deals for their commuter, responsibility and reader allowances, as had earlier been agreed between them and the government.
