The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has emerged
victorious again, in this year’s general election. The Africa's oldest president, Mugabe, 89, was declared victor for his seventh (7th) term as president of
Zimbabwe on Saturday, August 3, according to the head of the country's
Election Commission. He won with just over 61
percent of the votes, against nearly 34 percent for Morgan Tsvangirai, his
opponent.
Robert Mugabe has been the leader of Zimbabwe in southern Africa since
1980 and is the country's only leader since it gained independence from
Britain.
The two leading
African observer groups; the African Union (AU) and the Southern
African Development Committee (SADC) said that the elections were peaceful.
