The purpose of the meeting is to share and
ventilate issues coming from the regions, calling for action and cooperate
planning the action line. It is emerging that challenges to peace in Africa are
many and new ones are emerging. Some of the issues that captured the attention
of the delegation include concerns on the governance status of the African
countries, migration, refugees, human trafficking, terrorism and extractive
industries. In order for the Church to effectively respond to these challenges,
unity in purpose for the Church of Africa is required. Justice and Peace
Departments need to consolidate their action more and more while at the same
time working with other like-minded organizations pursuing the same or similar
objectives.
The Church was seen as endowed with a
crucial role to play especially on advocacy front and working close to their
governments. That is why, while here in Burundi, the delegates took time to
visit the President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency President P.
Nkuruziza, for a sharing of intentions and an expression of the need for
political leaders to collaborate with the Church on governance issues. The
Church need to be present in regional and continental governance processes so
as to represent her interests for the people. Finally we need to harvest all
the successes and gains made in the region for best practices and learning.
